Submit Your Green School Award Application Today! Local Schools Get An Opportunity to Receive Funding For Their Environmental Initiatives

Experts say that teaching children from a young age about sustainability is proven to help them maintain an eco-friendly mindset and a personal connection to responsibly protecting and preserving our natural resources.

To that end, for the past ten years, to help children (and schools) throughout the Ventura Unified School District (VUSD), the City of Ventura’s Environmental Sustainability Division in partnership with Agromin Premium Soil Products and EJ Harrison offers the Environmental Leader Award in recognition of Earth Day. Ventura Water has also become a part of the program honoring a deserving school that demonstrates water wise practices with the “Watershed Hero Award.”

Applications for the 2017-2018 year are now being accepted online (this will link to the application) until March 31, 2018.

“This year our new award program is designed to support new and creative projects. We hope to encourage schools to pursue environmental leadership and use this award money to fund new project ideas,” said City of Ventura Environmental Specialist Brandon Kaysen,

“Previous awards have gone to schools that have demonstrated superior recycling programs, waste management projects, water conservation projects, and other environmental education programs.”

City of Ventura Environmental Sustainability Division’s free classroom and field trip opportunities focus on recycling, energy, waste management, and stormwater. Ventura Water presents programs water conservation, water quality, and local water resources.

“Throughout the years we have seen tremendous environmental leadership from schools in Ventura. It is always encouraging to see students and staff working together to promote water conservation on campus. Ventura Water hopes the Watershed Hero Award will serve as a tool to help campuses achieve their water efficiency goals.”

The City of Ventura will award schools with full or partial funding for projects that promote sustainability and water conservation on campus. The City’s in-house Green School Awards committee will review all applications, and the winners will be announced during the week of Earth Day (April 22-28) at the start of the City Council meeting at City Hall on Monday, April 23, 6:00 p.m.
