Westpark Community Center, a 7-acre park in Ventura offering lighted softball/soccer fields, handball courts, children play areas, also provides a number of educational and affordable youth programs to residents. In addition, the park also boasts an impressive community garden that serves to demonstrate to residents the sustainable nature and native beauty of water wise gardens.
Parks and Environmental Sustainability staff worked in partnership to revamp and expand the community garden at Westpark, adding 4 larger plots for community gardening, a river rock artistic feature, expanded composting, and a rain barrel demonstration.
“With the grant funding, we’ve been able to install a rain barrel, a composite site, and functional demonstration spots,” said Mario Robinson, City of Ventura Youth Programs Supervisor. “It’s a great means to educate and instruct residents on how to create an edible garden.”
