Fresh, local produce and great deals on items from clothing to furniture and garden plants, are just some of the wares being sold at Ventura College Foundation’s Weekend Marketplace, which is free and open to the public and held on Saturdays and Sundays from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Ventura College on Telegraph Road. There’s just one thing, don’t forget to bring your own reusable bag!
As of August 1, 2015, in an effort to support community sustainability, and working together with the City of Ventura’s Environmental Sustainability Division, the swap meet and, or as it is officially know, the Ventura College Foundation Marketplace, has banned the plastic bag.
“When the Foundation’s executive director and I met with the City’s Courtney Lindberg, she explained how the plastic bag ban helps promote community sustainability and we felt so strongly about the many benefits, we knew we had to get on board, even despite the fact that the statewide ordinance has been tabled until after the November 2016 elections,” said Esmeralda Juarez, Market Place Supervisor, Ventura College Foundation.
Some of the many benefits to the environment by banning plastic bags include: trash diversion from crowded landfills (plastic can take up to 1,000 years to decompose), decrease in energy use (less plastic, less energy needed to make them which reduces greenhouse gas emissions), and in coastal cities, cleaner oceans and healthier marine life (less plastic pollution in the ocean).
Jaurez reports that while the Marketplace vendors were a bit leery about the bag ban at first and somewhat resistant as to how it would impact their businesses, once they understood the benefits, the majority of vendors have quickly become green advocates.
Marketplace got the word out to the public about the impending ban and the need to BYO reusable bag several months before the August 1, 2015 ban date by sending out emails, flyers, and posting informational posters throughout the Marketplace.
“In the future, we hope to be able to distribute free reusable bags,” said Juarez, “for now however, we’re asking customers to do their part to help keep Ventura beautiful and bring their own!”
