In honor of America Recycles Day, November 15, the Ventura Charter School of Arts and Global Education was selected to receive the Green School Award for 2012. This is the sixth year that the city’s Environmental Sustainability Division in partnership with Agromin Premium Soil Products has given this award to a local school that has shown exemplary efforts in caring for our environment.  Mayor Tracy presented the award to Mary Galvin, Director of Operations for the school at the November 5 City Council Meeting. Bill Camarillo, CEO of Agromin also gave the school a check for $500 as part of the award.

Another presentation was given at the school by Deputy Mayor Heitman on November 7 at the kick-off for the school’s annual Trash-a-thon fundraiser. The students obtain pledges to clean up litter hot spots within the city helping our community and supporting the city’s Safe and Clean initiative.

A key component to Ventura Charter School’s “green” success is the collaboration between students, staff and custodians to ensure that environmentally friendly practices are a primary goal. Working with parents the school encourages nutritious low-waste lunches, and on-campus events are subject to a “zero” waste policy and recycling strategy wherein students and their families bring tableware to eliminate trash.

The school’s fifth and sixth grade students recently conducted a waste assessment with the city’s Environmental Specialist, Jill Sarick that involved sorting and categorizing the school’s trash to help expand the school’s waste reduction efforts.  The school’s Green Club meets monthly to create a culture of environmental responsibility and helps to find more ways to reduce, reuse and recycle.  Environmental education programs from the city are supporting these efforts and helping to raise student awareness about trash, recycling and water use.

Another major fundraiser for the school is the Earth Day Ecofest, an annual event in Ventura that provides community education about sustainability and environmental stewardship. We congratulate Ventura Charter School for all their sustainability efforts as our 2012 Green School Award winner!
