Thursday, November 15, 2012 is the fifteenth annual America Recycles Day (ARD) celebration. A program of Keep America Beautiful, this nationally recognized day is dedicated to encouraging Americas to recycle and to buy products made from recycled materials. The purpose of ARD is to inform, educate and promote the social, environmental and economic benefits of recycling. Check out the official ARD website at www.americarecyclesday.org to learn more or to make a pledge to recycle more.
When we recycle or buy recycled-content products we:
- Save our natural resources such as trees, water, minerals and oil
- Save energy
- Save landfill space
- Save greenhouse gas emissions
- Provide jobs in the recycling and manufacturing industries
For example recycling one ton of paper saves 17 trees, 71 gallons of fuel 7,000 gallons of water, 4.6 cubic yards of landfill space, 601 kilowatts of energy and 60 pounds of air pollution. Remember every clean piece of paper counts when it comes to recycling.
Here in Ventura, working with our partners E. J. Harrison & Sons, we have been doing a good job of recycling. However, we can always improve and move toward the new State of California goal of a 75% recycling and diversion rate by 2020. A complete list of recyclables can be downloaded from our website www.cityofventura.net/pw/es/resrecycling. To see what Harrison and Gold Coast Recycling do with the material that is collected locally, check out their videos.
It’s not hard to make every day America Recycles Day.
